The Creative Time Emerging Artist Open Call

Application Dates: January 21 - March 15, 2020

The Creative Time Emerging Artist Open Call is back! Following the resounding success of the inaugural iteration -- which culminated in Risa Puno’s The Privilege of Escape in summer 2019 -- New York’s leading public art nonprofit is once again inviting emerging artists to submit proposals for a socially engaged public artwork.

The call is open to New York City-based, practicing artists at a pivotal juncture in their career, who have not yet received substantial support from a major cultural institution. Creative Time is most interested in ideas that take unconventional exhibition formats, speak to a pressing social issue, and engender public dialogue or debate. The project should be timely, and hold the potential to spark critical public exchange.

Proposals will be accepted between January 21 and March 15, and the selected project will be presented in New York City in 2021.

Eligibility:

Living Classrooms Foundation of the National Capital Region (Living Classrooms) seeks a muralist to create conservation-themed murals for five cement bridge panels along the Benning Road Ethel Kennedy Bridge near the Benning Road entrance to Kingman and Heritage Islands. Kingman Island is an incredible natural resource and recreation area and was designated a state conservation area by Mayor Muriel Bowser in 2018.

The purpose of this project is to beautify access to the Islands by creating an attractive passage, while simultaneously increasing stewardship from the local community. The commissioned murals are planned for the areas of the bridge closest to the Island’s entrance. In addition to the murals, community members will be stenciling wildlife images on panels along the full span of the bridge. Note that the mural sites will be prepped by Living Classrooms staff and volunteers.

Eligibility:

  • Preference given to District residents, especially of Wards 7 and 8.
